The weather was nice, so with nothing on our schedule we decided to enjoy a walk around the city. The architecture is amazing. It seems that if there was an opportunity to add a little special touch to a building façade, whether that be a sculpted face, ornamental columns, or decorative trim, then it was added in spades – all of it carved from stone.
Along the way we stopped for a gelato. The quality of the gelato here in Bologna far exceeds that of any other city we’ve ever been in. Today’s gelato at Cremeria Funivia was great. My two flavors were almond with amaretto bits and candied almonds & pine nut with toasted pine nuts. Cinzia’s two flavors were cherry with chocolate flakes, almond-hazelnut brittle and candied cherries & chocolate with eggnog-chocolate cake. Yes, they’re both listed on our Gelato-A-Day page along with all of the other flavors we've eaten on this trip. There’s also a rankings of all 23 gelaterias we’ve visited.
We also tried to visit a church that we’ve previously been in. The church of San Giovanni in Monte has a carving of a wooden Christ bound to a stone column which dates back to the 16th century. We took a few photos earlier in our trip, but they didn’t come out good, so we’ve wanted to return to get better photos. It was closed today when we stopped by. (Since then we’ve stopped by 2 more times only to find the doors locked.)
We had lunch at Tamburini – the city’s famous deli. Even with the temperatures dropping, all of the eateries still offer al fresco dining. We had some meat and cheese boards along with our drinks. There were also signs that the city was getting prepared with this tomorrow’s chocolate show. For dessert after dinner we had fresh sheep’s milk ricotta topped with some Fabbri cherries.
