It’s starting to get colder here in Rome. I am a very cold-natured during winter. I generally like the temperature in the house to be between 72°F and 75°F. Once I get cold it takes a while for me to warm up.
We have had radiators for heat in both apartments. In Florence, we had a thermostat that we could control ourselves. Here in Rome there is no thermostat, but when we checked in our landlord said the heat would come on around the 12th or 15th, he wasn’t sure. The past couple nights have been very cold in the apartment so I e-mailed Roberto this morning to find out how to turn the heat on.
Late this afternoon Jelena (Roberto’s girlfriend and business partner) stopped by to turn the heat on for us (with the assistance of Roberto who was on her cell phone). A plumber had come by last week to do maintenance on the water heater, but did not set the heating timer for the radiators.
I was in the other room as Vic watched what Jelena was doing. She asked him a question that he relayed to me, “What two hours do you want heat?” What two hours do I want heat??? How about more like 12 hours??? We are usually out most of the day, so I don’t need heat then, and even if we’re staying in it gets somewhat comfortable inside. At night though, as soon as it gets dark, which is about 5:30pm, it starts getting cold. So I said, “6pm to 6am”, figuring we were just misunderstanding her. When Vic told her 6pm to 6am she thought we were misunderstanding her. She said that they only turn on the heat two hours at a time, once in the morning and once in the evening, so we could choose 2 two-hour time periods. We asked for 6pm-8pm and 8am-10am and she ended up giving us an extra hour in the evening.
I’m sitting here blogging at 6:45pm and it’s still not warm enough. I think I try to be economical and save energy but heat is something I don’t like to skimp on. I’m already wearing more layers in the apartment then I usually do at home. I have a scarf on inside right now for goodness sakes! With high ceilings and tile floors throughout the apartment it is cold getting up in the middle of the night. I think I need footie pajamas. I love Italy but there are some things about home that I truly miss.
