All of a sudden the fall weather is upon us. It was a hotter than usual summer in Italy. When we arrived there was a heat wave across Europe. Torre Orsina, as well as Florence, saw many triple digit temperatures days. Both the months of August and September were much hotter than average. I think the heat lingered for longer than normal and now it abruptly turned cold.
The first week of October we were still seeing many days in the mid-80’s. The next week there were 5 days in the mid-70’s, then the temps dropped about 8-10 degrees and stayed that way ever since. Now for the past few days we've had lower than average temperatures. Today it never got above 59°F and it was windy too. It’s almost like Italy forgot to pay its heating and cooling bills this year. (You know they are in a bit of financial bind. Maybe they can sell some of the gold that seems to be all over the place to help pay the utilities.)
We still have a little over month to go in Italy. I didn't plan on it getting this cold this quickly. How do you pack for 4 month to include temperatures from 105°F to 35°F? I may need to buy clothes, gloves (I forgot to bring those), a few more scarves and more socks. If I have to go home with a few euro-chic outfits that won’t be too bad. Thankfully Vic asked me to pack our warm LL Bean slippers, so we both have toasty feet while we’re in the apartment.
An old building without much insulation, windows that have a few gaps when closed, and high ceiling all contribute to a chilly apartment. We have radiator heating but not too sure how it works or how much that bill will be so right now we’re just trying to bundle up inside.
I've looked at the weather forecast for Rome and it looks like it may be a few degrees warmer than it has been here but then I don’t think Italian weather forecasters are any better than American ones, so who knows???
